Consumer unit replacement in Inverness

Fuse box upgrades planned around the condition of your wiring, the protection your circuits need and any future electrical work.

An upgrade starts with the installation

Your consumer unit distributes electricity to the circuits in your property. Replacing it involves checking the existing installation as well as fitting a new board. We assess the work, explain any issues that affect the upgrade and agree the scope before installation.

Clear labellingIdentify circuits so the completed installation is easier to understand.
Testing & handoverInspect and test the work and provide the appropriate certification.

When is a replacement worth discussing?

You may be renovating, adding new circuits, planning an EV charger or responding to observations in an electrical report. We explain whether the existing board can support the proposed work and which improvements are needed. An older consumer unit does not automatically mean the whole property needs rewiring.

If you are buying a home, our electrical-checks guide for homebuyers explains what to ask about the existing installation before planning an upgrade.

What happens during a fuse box upgrade?

We review the supply arrangements, existing circuits and relevant test information. The quote sets out the proposed board, circuit protection and associated work. We plan the power interruption with you, then complete the installation, circuit identification, inspection and testing.

Modern protection can reveal faults in existing wiring or connected equipment. If additional investigation or repairs are needed, we explain the findings and discuss the work involved. Our fault-finding service and electrical testing support that process.

RCBOs and surge protection

These terms often appear in upgrade quotes. An RCBO combines overcurrent and residual-current protection for an individual circuit; a surge protective device helps protect against transient overvoltages. The appropriate selection depends on the installation and the work being carried out. We explain the proposed arrangement in plain language.

Getting a useful quote

Send your postcode, a photograph of the outside of the existing board and a brief description of why you are considering an upgrade. Do not remove a cover to take a photograph. Mention any existing report and planned additions such as home EV charging, an extension or new kitchen equipment.

We provide consumer unit replacement for homes in Inverness and across the Scottish Highlands. For larger distribution boards and three-phase installations, see our commercial electrical services.

Your questions, answered

Is a consumer unit the same as a fuse box?

People commonly use both terms for the equipment that distributes electricity to the circuits in a property. We can assess older fuse boxes and modern consumer units.

Will the electricity be off during the work?

Yes, the work requires the supply to be isolated. Tell us about essential equipment when booking so that the interruption and any arrangements can be discussed in advance.

Will replacing the board fix every electrical fault?

No. A fault may be in the wiring or connected equipment. Testing and investigation establish the cause, and any associated repairs need to be included in the agreed scope.

How much does consumer unit replacement cost?

The circuit count, board specification, condition of the installation and any associated work affect the price. We assess those details before confirming a quote.
