Planning a home EV charger in Inverness and the Highlands

A useful charging setup starts with where you park, how you drive and what your property can support. Gather these details before choosing a charger or asking for an installation quote.

Caledonia Electrical Highlands Ltd installs home and workplace charging points from our Inverness base. Our installation gallery includes Ohme and myenergi Zappi chargers, and our Ohme project shows a finished wall-mounted unit.

Start with the parking space and charging port

Photograph where you normally park and note which side of the car has the charging port. Think about a second vehicle, reversing into the space and keeping a clear route to the front door. A charger close to the building may still need a different cable length depending on the parking arrangement.

Tell us whether the space is on your property, shared or separate from the house. Permissions, ownership and a safe cable route need to be established before work is agreed. If the installation would depend on crossing a public pavement, mention that at the outset so the arrangements can be investigated.

Choose between a tethered cable and a socketed charger

A tethered charger has its cable attached; an untethered unit has a socket for a separate compatible cable. Consider how often you charge, the required reach and where the cable will be stored. Send the exact vehicle and charger model so their connections and requirements can be checked.

Let the survey establish the electrical requirements

The existing supply, other electrical loads, consumer unit, earthing, protective devices and cable route all matter. Tell us about electric heating, a shower, solar panels, battery storage or another charger, including anything planned for later.

Charging speed depends on the vehicle, charger and available supply. The installation plan also needs to consider whether notification or permission is required from the electricity network operator. The Energy Networks Association explains the connection process. We discuss the appropriate checks and any necessary electrical or supply work before confirming the scope.

Discuss smart controls and solar equipment

Explain when the car is normally at home and whether you want charging schedules, app controls or integration with a particular tariff. Product compatibility and the connection requirements vary, so provide the model and details of any equipment already installed.

Some compatible chargers can use surplus solar generation. If that matters to you, tell us about the panels, inverter and battery. The charging setup needs to work with that equipment and with your driving routine; solar generation and the amount available for the car vary.

Compare the complete installation scope

Ask what is included: the charger, cable route and length, installation work, protective devices, testing, handover and any associated upgrades. Access through a finished house, detached parking and groundwork can affect the work involved. Explain who will arrange any building or finishing work.

A photograph helps start the discussion, but it cannot establish every supply or installation detail. Any survey, network requirements and required upgrades need to be considered before an installation date and final scope are agreed.

Send these details for an EV charger quote

  • Your postcode and whether it is a home or business installation.
  • The vehicle make and model, or the vehicle you have on order.
  • The charger make and model if you already have one in mind.
  • Photographs of the parking space and the closed front of the consumer unit.
  • Details of solar, battery storage, large electrical loads and future plans.
  • Any access, ownership or building-work arrangements, and your preferred timing.

Take photographs from a safe position and leave all electrical covers in place. We arrange work in Inverness and surrounding towns including Nairn, Dingwall, Muir of Ord and Beauly; see our Highland service coverage. Send your charger enquiry to discuss the next step.

Planning chargers at work?

For staff, visitor or fleet charging, add the number of vehicles, parking layout, time on site and any future expansion. Our EV charging service and commercial electrical work pages explain how to begin the discussion.
